What Is Sustainable Fabric?

Sustainable textiles are materials derived from eco-friendly resources like natural fibers, and recycled materials. For many years, the idea of sustainable textiles was basically synonymous with natural fibers. Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, silk, and bamboo are more sustainable than synthetic fibers, typically polyester, nylon, and acrylic.

But while natural fibers are more sustainable, there are still environmental concerns to consider. Cotton, for example, requires a great deal of water and pesticides to thrive. And, contrary to popular belief, comparing cotton fiber to recycled polyester fiber, the latter would be more sustainable.

Sustainable textiles are transforming the homeware industry, providing eco-friendly options for consumers and paving the way for a more sustainable future. As environmental awareness increases, the demand for home decoration and textiles that align with sustainable practices has surged. This trend is primarily driven by the growing recognition that the textile industry, one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution, must adopt more eco-friendly production and waste management techniques.

In response, companies like JHT Homewares are taking concrete steps to reduce their environmental footprint and promote sustainability across the textile supply chain. JHT's recent sustainability disclosure outlines that the company is investing in renewable energy, reducing production waste, using certified and recyclable materials, and developing innovative biodegradable textiles.

Environmental Benefits

Sustainable textiles in home decoration aim to minimize their environmental footprint from production to disposal. Key environmental benefits include:

Reduction in Water Usage: The production of sustainable textiles often requires less water compared to conventional methods. For example, organically grown cotton uses water more efficiently and often relies on rainfall rather than intensive irrigation systems.

Decreased Chemical Pollutants: Natural dyes and the absence of harmful chemicals in the processing of sustainable textiles result in fewer pollutants entering ecosystems.

Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Sustainable textile production tends to have a lower carbon footprint due to responsible energy usage and minimal transport distances.
Waste Minimization: Recycled materials are a cornerstone of sustainable textiles, turning potential waste into new fibers and reducing landfill contributions.

Highlights of JHT's sustainability efforts

Installation of solar panels to provide clean energy for manufacturing facilities, reducing annual coal consumption by 694 tons. This cuts carbon emissions by over 1,700 tons per year.

Collection and recycling of production waste, like fabric scraps, to be reused as filling material in products like pet beds. This closes the loop on the product lifecycle.

● Use of third-party sustainability certifications like OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and participation in industry programs like the ZDHC Roadmap to Zero. These ensure products are free of harmful chemicals.

Collaboration with brands like Repreve and Suprelle Blue to develop recycled polyester using plastic bottles and ocean plastics diverted from landfills.

Adoption of new biodegradable fibers like CELYSTM compostable polyester, PrimaLoft Bio, and Naia cellulosic fiber made from recycled wood pulp. These help tackle microplastic pollution.

As consumer demand grows for ethically and sustainably made goods, textile companies will need to continue improving their environmental performance. JHT's multipronged approach shows promising steps in the right direction for this vital industry. With more brands following suit to implement renewable materials and clean production practices, we can work collectively to achieve a more sustainable future.
